2g and 3g network shutdown by mobile network operators
Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have made public their decision to gradually phase out 2G and 3G networks. According to the information available, MNO’s will start phasing out 2G and 3G progressively as of the end of 2025, stating in countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland and/or Israel, and subsequently expanding to the rest of the world. Such decision to phase out 2G and 3G networks affects various sectors of society, including the automotive industry.
In particular, the functions and or services of CUPRA vehicle models that still rely on 2G and 3G network will be affected, namely:
CUPRA connected services
CUPRA vehicle models GEN3 (pre-UNECE) still rely on 2G/3G networks for CUPRA Connected Car Services (i.e. Service Scheduling, Parking Position, Vehicle Status, Online Map Update or Remote Lock & Unlock).
To ensure that our customers continue enjoying the CUPRA Connected Car Services, CUPRA is working on an over the air vehicle software update campaign (expected during 2025) to allow GEN3 pre-UNECE vehicle models (please see table below (*)) to continue enjoying CUPRA Connected Car Services.
Public emergency call
CUPRA vehicles models GEN3 and GEN4 (pre-UNECE & UNECE) were designed in accordance with the prevailing legislation and the widely accepted standards of the time and therefore still rely on 2G/3G networks for the Public Emergency Call function.
To ensure that our customers continue benefiting from an emergency call in case of an incident, CUPRA has adopted following:
For vehicles first commercialized in countries within Europe:
- Vehicles manufactured after November 2024: introduction of a Private eCall service in all models. Therefore, they are not affected.
- Vehicles manufactured before November 2022 were equipped with the Private eCall service. Therefore, they are not affected.
- Vehicles manufactured between November 2022 and November 2024 (and Born between September 2021 and February 2022): CUPRA is actively working on a solution for Private eCall to be implemented before 2G/3G disconnection. (Please see table below (**)).
Please note that Ateca, Terramar and Tavascan have been equipped with Private eCall since the start of their production and they are therefore not affected.
For vehicles first commercialized in non-European countries:
- Kindly be advised the Public eCall will no longer be available after the 2G/3G network phase-out, as a technical solution for introduction of a Private eCall is currently unfeasible.
